Man, I didn’t think we would need to revisit this topic so soon. As you remember, we had a whale wash up on Ocean Beach mid September. Well, a Blue Whale and her calf were found dead on the beach earlier this week just south of Half Moon Bay.
Quick note: The pics get a little graphic so…you may want to just stick to these first two.
What you’re looking at is an 80 foot Blue Whale found dead last Tuesday at the Bean Hollow State Park which is halfway between San Francisco and Santa Cruz along Hwy 1. Because the whale landed on the beach upside down, it’s challenging to determine the cause of death…but it is suspected that it was hit by a container ship.
Last time a Blue Whale washed up in these parts was back in 1979. Over 7 years, that blue whale’s skeleton was cleaned and now lives at the Long Marine Laboratory done at UC – Santa Cruz…dubbed “Ms. Blue“.Emotions were running high…seeing nature’s largest mammal in person was out of this world…sad it happened this way.
It’s challenging to get a sense of scale of this blue whale. Take a moment and compare it to the people standing around it. I read that the heart of a full sized blue while can be the size of a Volkswagen beetle.
The sun fell below the waves, it was time to head home. On a happier note…along the trail back to the road…we finally spotted Tiburon Paintbrush…more on that soon.
