Bat Faced Cuphea

Holy haberdashery, Batman! It’s a colony of bats swarming Golden Gate Park.

Seriously, how cute are these flowers on this new Cuphea species, Cuphea ‘Minnie Mouse’Cuphea ‘Minnie Mouse’

Here’s the perennial in full view.  Cuphea grows well in San Francisco up to 3 foot tall and wide.   Besides Bat Face,  I’ve seen other common names such as Cigar Bush, and Firecracker.

Hey, there’s another cool orange version too, Cuphea ‘Strybing Sunset’.

In fact…we have one.  Hum, I figured there had to be a connection between this cultivar, ‘Strybing Sunset’, and the Strybing Arboretum located in Golden Gate Park.  I found that Kelly Kilpatrick at Annie’s Annuals propagates this cultivar, but I can’t say for certain if they created it.  Anybody know more history on ‘Strybing Sunset’?  BTW, you should really check out Kelly’s blog, Floradora.  It’s full of good reads, and gorgeous photography.
