What? Free Mulch

We headed to one of our favorite places in Bayview neighborhood, the Free Mulch place.

The car is dwarfed by the mounds of mulch.

The official name of this place is Bay View Green Waste, over on 1300 Carroll Ave (off 3rd St), San Francisco, CA 94118.  It is list as a Compost retailer…however the compost is not quite fully finished, but works really well as a mulch. And best yet, it is FREE.

Matti shoveling it in.

It is a shovel it yourself, haul yourself type of place.

There is some dust, but a lot of that is steam.

We line the car with a big blue tarp.  There is definitely some dust involved, but this stuff is pretty damp when you get it…and most of that above is steam..not dust.

Steaming Mulch.

Looks like the fog rolling into the Bay.

This place is open to the public on Saturdays from 7:30-noon, but says you can call if a weekday pick up, 415-822-7686.

Big piles need big machines.

You can see on the left, the pile is a little lighter in color.  That is more wood chip like mulch, the stuff on right is finer and what we like best.  We put some on our garden (a sandy soil), last year, and most of it has broken down.  Time to replenish.  Hey for those that do not live in SF, I bet there is a place just like this in your hood.  If you know of any, we would love to hear of them.
