Elephant Seals Are Exciting!

I love Elephant Seals! We checked out the San Simeon Elephant Seals this past weekend and they’re really cool. They make weird noises and flop around. Some of them looked dead, but I think they were okay. This time of year there were quite a few fresh (afterbirth still attached) pups and moms. A little bit south from the main viewing area is a nice little cove where you can check them out without 100 other people jammed around you. No babies down there, but a decent amount of adults lying around. I’m so hooked on Elephant Seals I made reservations to see the motherload of them at Ano Nuevo in late February. How exciting does this sound:

“Año Nuevo State Park is the site of the largest mainland breeding colony in the world for the northern elephant seal, and the interpretive program has attracted increasing interest every winter for the past 19 years. People who hope to see the seals during the winter breeding season are urged to get their reservations early. The males battle for mates on the beaches and the females give birth to their pups on the dunes.”
